Discover Yakitori Totto

Yakitori Totto is a standout in Somerville, MA, offering an authentic Japanese dining experience that keeps locals coming back. Located at 455 Foley St, this hidden gem brings the vibrant flavors of Japan’s yakitori culture to the heart of New England. When you walk through the doors, you immediately get the feeling of being transported to a traditional Japanese grill house, where simplicity meets flavor in every dish.

The menu at Yakitori Totto is centered around skewered meats, but it’s the way they’re cooked that makes them special. Each skewer is grilled to perfection over an open flame, resulting in a beautifully charred exterior and juicy, tender interior. The chefs here use top-quality, fresh ingredients, ensuring that each bite is full of flavor. The restaurant’s yakitori dishes-ranging from succulent chicken thigh to the more adventurous heart and gizzard-showcase the variety of textures and tastes you can expect from a well-prepared yakitori meal.

But it’s not just the yakitori that shines. Yakitori Totto also offers a variety of sides and accompaniments to complement the skewers. Their rice bowls are a perfect pairing, with fluffy rice topped with savory ingredients like grilled pork or seasoned tofu. The grilled vegetables are another highlight-crispy, smoky, and bursting with flavor, they offer a delicious counterbalance to the rich meats. If you're looking for a more substantial dish, the miso soup and salads round out the meal perfectly, providing freshness and a lighter contrast to the grilled fare.

One of the standout features of Yakitori Totto is their dedication to maintaining the authenticity of Japanese cuisine while adapting to local tastes. The menu is crafted with careful attention to detail, featuring not only traditional yakitori but also Japanese-inspired fusion dishes. The Japanese draft beers and unique sake selection perfectly complement the flavors of the meal, providing a full dining experience that you won’t soon forget.

When it comes to customer experience, Yakitori Totto excels. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, ensuring that every visit feels like a personalized experience. Whether you’re a first-time diner or a regular, they take the time to guide you through the menu and offer recommendations based on your preferences. The cozy, intimate atmosphere adds to the charm, with an open kitchen that lets you watch the skilled chefs work their magic over the grill. It’s a truly immersive experience, allowing guests to enjoy not only the delicious food but also the artistry behind each dish.

Reviews of Yakitori Totto are overwhelmingly positive, with many patrons praising the quality of the food, the authenticity of the flavors, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Regulars often mention the consistency of the food, which is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality. Whether you're stopping in for a quick meal or celebrating a special occasion, Yakitori Totto delivers an experience that makes you feel like part of the family.

In addition to its regular menu, Yakitori Totto also offers special promotions and seasonal dishes, which keeps things fresh and exciting for repeat customers. This attention to variety and seasonality adds an extra layer of appeal for those who enjoy trying new things and exploring different flavors.

For those wondering if Yakitori Totto is worth a visit, the answer is a resounding yes. It’s the perfect spot for anyone craving authentic, high-quality yakitori in Somerville. • I always have a great experience at Yakitori Totto! I usually order the chicken thighs with a poached egg on top, which is delicious. However, I find there’s often too much rice, leaving me with a lot of leftovers. On the plus side, their appetizers are amazing—we always get the cheese wontons, which never fail to impress. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for tasty Japanese food, especially if you love their appetizers!

  • We had such a wonderful time at Yakitori Totto! Our waiter Joe was incredibly kind and always had a smile, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The food was absolutely amazing — I’m originally from Japan, and it’s rare to find truly authentic yakitori in the U.S. Every skewer at Totto was clearly crafted by an experienced yakitori chef over a special grill, and the flavors were spot on. The yakitori was so delicious that I couldn’t resist eating everything right away — not many photos this time! My personal favorites were the yaki onigiri and the tsukune, both outstanding. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for real Japanese yakitori. Can’t wait to go back!

  • I definitely recommend this place! I stopped by for a quick lunch on Monday. The server was very friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and helpful. Since I had never dined here before and wasn't familiar with this type of cuisine, I really appreciated how he explained the menu to us, page by page, and answered all our questions in such a kind manner. Everything I tried was delicious, but my favorite was the chicken skin with onigiri salmon! For an appetizer, I had the fried eggplant in sweet broth, which was warm and refreshing. I like it but I thought it was a bit too large for an appetizer.

  • The miso soup was great to start off with the shivering cold. You should visit here to try different options for Yakitori. For vegetarian I would recommend to go for Eggplant and mushroom. Avoid the Okra. My husband crazy over the one and only Beef. He also recommends the Pork Karashi. The udon noodle soup, Negi Tori Don was amazing as well. For desserts, try the Mochi Ice Cream if you’re into Mochi. The Matcha Tea Affogato was surprisingly quite good. The service was very good and fast and the staff was very welcoming with bright smiles.

  • Fans of the Netflix show “Midnight Diner” will love Yakitor Totto. We were delighted to find some of the dishes featured in the show on the menu - dishes you rarely see on the menu of Japanese restaurants in the U.S., such as Ochazuke, Rolled omelet, Oyako Don, and others. The feel of the place is similar to Midnight Diner, with a wrap-around counter enclosing the open kitchen. The waitstaff is kind, and Japanese in manner. It has a mom-and-pop feel, despite its existence as a chain restaurant. Maybe that’s unique to the Somerville location, in the Assembly shopping center, right close to the Orange Line Assembly stop. They have some of my favorite things, including chicken skin, thigh, and Bonjiri (chicken butt, where the tail feathers attach), and a whole bunch of other delights served as Yakitori. I told my wife this is where I would come if I ever wanted to eat myself into a coma… it’s that good. We’re always looking for the best taste-per-dollar experiences we can find, and Yakitori Totto is a terrific choice. Not only is it reasonably priced, but it has high marks on every other level as well.

  • Absolutely loved our dinner here. The place is super cute, the food is super authentic and delicious and the staff were lovely. My cocktail was yummy too. We will be back and have already told people to visit.

  • This place is legit! Each skewer is cooked perfectly - whether it’s the juicy chicken thigh, tender tsukune, or perfectly charred vegetables. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in technique and consistency. The menu offers a great variety, we were able to share and try many dishes! Service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive, and the pacing of the meal was just right. It’s the kind of place you want to linger, order one more round, and enjoy the experience. If you’re looking for high-quality Japanese comfort food done right, Yakitori Totto Boston is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back!

  • I love this place. Before moving away, I'd come every other week. Now, whenever I'm in town for work, it is a requirement to stop by!! The food is always fresh and delicious. I've never had a bad order here; Everything on the menu is amazing front to back, from the appetizers to dessert, from lunch to dinner, every meal is perfect. On top of amazing food, everyone who works here is a delight. There's a waiter during dinner service who speaks so sweetly and he always is smiling. He is so fun to order with because I'll say "mmmm maybe one more" and he'll be like "yesss one more" haha During lunch service, Hugh (? I hope I spelled that right) is a great one man show! Whether you're the only party in the restaurant or he's juggling a larger lunch service, he makes you feel right at home and catered to. I always enjoy getting to see him (: If you want a great Japanese restaurant, a quick bite, a cute date spot, a fun eating experience, or just all of the above, then you HAVE to come to Yakitori Totto!
